a special treat for our consumers. Pictured in the photo on the left

United Way Assists WAC
In November, we were
notified by the Warren County United Way that they would assist us with
purchasing an AED/Defibrillator for our workshop, Achievement Industries.
This will provide a measure of safety to our consumers, as our consumer
population is aging. Along with the purchase of the defibrillator, a
trainer model was also purchased to help with the training of our staff.
Pictured is Vicki McNamara, Executive Director of the United Way and Michael
Lewis, President/CEO of WAC. |

Tri-County
Health Care Planning Network Update
In May, 2008, Warren Achievement Center
was notified that they had been awarded a two-year HRSA Rural Health Network
Planning grant on behalf of the Tri-County Health Care Planning Network (T-CHCPN).
The funding will allow the network to develop a comprehensive plan to
address the unmet health care transportation needs in Henderson, Mercer and
Warren Counties. T-CHCPN is a group of community providers in the three
county area that recognizes the need to improve transportation options for
residents. Some of the network members are the providers of care who deal
with missed appointments and who struggle with making referrals to
specialists knowing the patient will have difficulty getting to the
appointment. Other network members are providers of services to the aging
community who are challenged to manage the needs of their clients when
transportation options are limited. And, others are units of local
government or local health departments who are responsible for the health
and well-being of the residents of their communities.
In October and November the Network
conducted focus groups to gather information on residents’ transportation
needs. The information has been compiled and was presented to the Network
at its November meeting. The Network is now in the process of developing
action plans using the community data. Their work will include looking at
what other rural communities are doing, identify non-traditional resources
in the area, researching funding strategies and providing continuous
feedback to the community.

| Learning
To Be Lean |
| Through
funding from the State of Illinois Attorney General's office, WAC has
developed the "Learning To Be Lean" project. This
project teaches people with disabilities about healthy eating and
living. After two years of work, we are seeing the benefits of our
efforts. We have developed a picture-based cookbook with over 150
recipes that match the best information available on healthy
eating. We created an exercise center with both aerobics and
strength training. We have computer-based instruction and flash
cards to aid in the learning process. We are offering the
program to all of the people at WAC; then in accordance with our
grant agreement, we will offer the ideas and materials to other agencies
in the state of Illinois. A website is being developed in that
effort. |

It started when Warren
Achievement Center Board member Marty Smith asked if Achievement Industries
could build a home altar for her Buddhist son-in-law. Achievement
Industries staff examined his old one and decided we could. The quality
and price of the home altar we built for him was better than what could be found
elsewhere. The idea for a new business was born. Achievement
Industries consumers could build wooden religious goods.
Dozens of prototypes,
strategy meetings, production planning discussions, photography sessions, we introduce
Serenity
Road. Internet
sales are booming as America takes advantage of the convenience of on-line
ordering and shipment of goods directly to the home. Warren Achievement
Center is stepping into the new commercial age.
At
www.maplecityemart.com,
our customers will find four lines of hand-constructed religious items.
Our largest line is for Buddhists, one of the fastest growing religions in the
U.S. Customers will find home altars, chanting stools, plant stands, and
scroll stands. Christians can choose from our nativity puzzle, Bible
stand, three dimensional cross, or a beautiful cross bank made of layers of
walnut and pine. Those of Jewish heritage will find dreidel kits, upsherin
boxes, and an exquisite tzedekah bank constructed from walnut and pine in the
shape of the Star of David. Followers of New Age practices will discover
home altars, candle trays, and prayer beads. Over time, we expect to add
more products to each of our lines.
All of these items are
made by individuals participating in Achievement Industries programs. Each
is carefully designed so our consumers can do most of the work, such as
operating the saws, staining and sanding, or stringing beads. Staff do a
few of the more difficult steps, such as hanging doors on the altars and final
quality checks. Consumers are paid for the work they do on
Serenity Road
products. The profits from sales of
Serenity Road products will go to
support the mission of Warren Achievement Center.
We invite all of our
friends and families to stop by and see our on-line
store. |
